"Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things."
— Robert Brault
This quote has echoed in my mind for over two decades. During my time in rehab 21 years ago, someone shared a simple yet profound insight: a duck can only be a duck. It has no choice. Similarly, a cow can only be a cow, a cat a cat. These beautiful creatures may embrace their nature, but they don't have the capacity to choose differently.
We, as humans, are different. We possess the remarkable ability to choose who we want to be. We can be musicians, writers, actors, waitstaff, truck drivers—anything we aspire to. Our lives are shaped by the choices we make, and it's up to us to decide our paths.
Consider the marvel of our existence: we live on a planet that spins in the vastness of space, positioned perfectly—not too close to the sun to burn, nor too far to freeze. Each morning, the sun rises; each night, the moon appears—reliable and consistent. We don't question whether or not the sun will set, or whether or not the moon will come out; we trust it. Similarly, when we plant a seed, we anticipate the bloom of a flower. These everyday occurrences are nothing short of miraculous, yet we often take them for granted.
Look around you. The buildings, the benches, the very ground beneath you—none of it existed a million years ago. Perhaps not even a hundred years ago. And in time, these structures will fade, replaced by something new. Change is the only thing in this world that is constant.
This moment, right now, is all we truly have. We have one life to live, and it's essential to listen to our hearts, to pursue what genuinely calls to us—not what others expect. We're not ducks confined to a single existence; we're humans, endowed with infinite possibilities and free will. Let's embrace this gift and make the most of our time here.
